Edwin Gearhart Obituary

Edwin D. Gearhart, Sr., 88, of Greenville, PA, passed away on December 24, 2020, in the home where he resided with his daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Dennis Humphrey, 149 Fredonia Road, Greenville, PA. Edwin was born on November 26, 1932, in Akron, OH, the son of the late Edwin and Isabelle Alabran Gearhart. Upon the passing of his mother in 1937, he was raised by his loving step-mother Edith Keller Gearhart. Prior to his retirement, he was self-employed as a builder of fine houses. As well as making his living as a builder, his greatest joy was building homes for his children. He also freely gave of his time and talents traveling many miles to build churches. He was a member of the New Apostolic Church of Greenville, PA. There he worked tirelessly as a deacon, visiting the sick and those who struggled. He never turned away a church member, relative, or friend in need. If there was anything he could do to make someone's life better, he would do it, asking nothing in return. Edwin was an example of Christian love and charity to all who knew him. Surviving are his five children; Debra (Randy) Colletti of Centerville, TN, Cayrol Page of Greenville, PA, Judy (Dennis) Humphrey of Greenville, PA; Kathy (Mark) Eklum of Jamestown, NY, and Edwin D. (Nanci) Gearhart, Jr. of Greenville, PA. Edwin is survived by 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was a loving and supportive father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. During his growing sickness, visits with his great-grandchildren could always make him smile. He is also survived by his brother, Curtis "Eugene" Gearhart of Virginia. Edwin and Eugene were brothers, co-workers, and friends. He had a four-legged companion named Teddy who stayed by his side to the end. He married Jessie Osborne on May 5, 1951. His most incredible sadness came when she left this world on October 8, 2017. For over 66 years, they shared a wonderful life devoted to each other. Besides his parents, step-mother, and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother: William Gearhart, and a sister Ruth Gearhart as well as step brothers and sisters. The three siblings were very close and enjoyed life together at every opportunity. He was also predeceased by a beautiful great-granddaughter, Cinnamon Rose Smith.
