James Reither Obituary

James W. “Jim” Reither Jr., 86 of Stoneboro, passed away after a short illness on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at 6:57 AM. James was born on February 22, 1931 to the late James William Reither Sr. and Laura Belle Steckler Reither. Jim was a 1948 graduate of Stoneboro High School and a star athlete in basketball and baseball. He was later inducted into the Mercer County Hall Of Fame for basketball. He was also scouted for the the St. Louis baseball farm team but decided to get married. He married the love of his life, Helen L. Oakes, on October 27, 1950, she preceded him in death on December 6, 2013. In his earlier years, Jim worked for Westinghouse and Sharon Steel, then started working for the railroads. He worked for New York Central which then became ConRail as a conductor, retiring in March of 1992. He loved his work and loved the trains. Jim was an amazing father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, especially loving the little ones. He took immense pride in his home and in his yard. He loved to read, watch horse races, and play cards, especially poker. He loved his sports, watching the Pirates, Yankees, golf, and college basketball. He was a wealth of sports information and could tell you nearly any baseball statistic from any year gone-by. Jim was also a lifelong member of Stoneboro Presbyterian Church. Jim is survived by his two daughters, Paula “Polly” Slater and husband Dean of Sandy Lake and Cheri L. Mazza of New Canaan, Connecticut, one son Richard J. “Rick” Reither and wife Lannie of Stoneboro, daughter-in-law Ruth Ann Reither, Greenville, nine grandchildren, Kelly Deniker and husband Clay, Ricky Reither and wife Linnie all Stoneboro, James B. Slater and wife Natalie and Joseph D. Slater all Sandy Lake, Molly Davis and husband Ryan, Greenville, Benjamin Reither and wife Amber, Hermitage, Melissa Johnson and husband Desmond, Stoneboro, Megan Muschick, Sandy Lake, and Connor Mazza, New Canaan, fourteen great grandchildren, Alissa and Alivia Slater, Sandy Lake, Patrick, Peyton, R.J., and Avery Davis, Greenville, Cody and Hannah Deniker, Stoneboro, Bryson, Marissa, Cami Reither, Stoneboro, Ethan, Lucas, Isabelle Johnson, Stoneboro, sisters Virginia Shutt, Lehigh Acres, Florida, and Ann Jackson and husband Donald, Mechanicburg, and his dog, Louie. In addition to his wife and parents, Jim was preceded in death by his son, Ronald D. Reither on July 26, 2015. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Black Funeral Home, 99 Franklin Street, Stoneboro, where family and friends are welcome from 4-7 pm on Tuesday (1-16-18) and on Wednesday (1-17-18) from 10 am until the time of the service at 11 am at the Stoneboro Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Adam J. Rodgers, church pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery Memorials may be made in Jim’s name to Meals on Wheels, or the Stoneboro Presbyterian Church, both to PO Box 548, Stoneboro, PA 16153
