Mary Opitz Obituary

Mary I. Opitz, 87 of Sandy Lake, passed away on June 8, 2019 at the Countryside Nursing Home in Mercer. Mary was born on April 24, 1932 in Kyger, WV, to the late Orus Brown Hersman and Marjorie Blanche Carpenter Hersman. She was a 1950 Graduate of Sandy Lake High School and went on to work at Polk Center as a Dietary Technician. Mary was a member of the New Lebanon Community Church. She also enjoyed traveling, especially to visit West Virginia. She also enjoyed reading and family get-togethers and picnics. Mary married her husband, Robert N. Opitz on June 2, 1950, recently celebrating 69 years of marriage. Robert survives at home. In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by her sons, Robert M. (Jacki) Opitz of Stoneboro, and David A. (Patti) Opitz of Sandy Lake, daughters Carol Myhand of Bishopville, SC, and Cheri Opitz of Sandy Lake, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and a sister, Mildred Custard. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by a great-grandson, sister-in-law Betty Brady, and brother-in-law Dale Opitz. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Black Funeral Home of STONEBORO, 99 Franklin Street, where family and friends are welcome from 4-7 pm on Thursday, June 13. A brief time of prayer will take place at the funeral home at 7 pm. Interment will take place in New Lebanon Cemetery.
